The Herald, Everett, WA, for “Waterfront Renaissance,” which allowed Internet users to click on development choices. It was one of three finalists for the online service-journalism award from the Online News Association and Columbia University. New Media Editor Mark Briggs said, “We offered our readers a tool that allowed them to communicate with us.”

The Lawrence (KS) Journal-World for “Lawrence is Growing.” The collaboration with 6News and World Online won first-place for Community Service award from the Inland Press Association for “showing leadership in the community.”

The Lincoln (NE) Journal Star for its “Medical Ethics Tough Choices” examination of state-sponsored scientific research. The collaboration with Nebraska ETV and KMTV 3 (NBC) captured a first-place for enterprise reporting from the Nebraska Associated Press Association. Former Journal Star editor David Stoeffler, now Lee Enterprises vice president for news, said, “The project was another example of how a civic-oriented approach works on all types of stories – including complex issues like modern medical science and the ethics of practices like stem-cell research.”
