Congratulations

Spring 1998

Congratulations to…

The Asbury Park Press and its series “House of Cards” and “What Ails Asbury” for winning

  • The Roy W. Howard Public Service Reporting Award, a trophy and $2,500 prize presented by the Scripps Howard Foundation.

  • The Unity Awards in Media for Public Affairs and Social Issues Reporting, presented by Lincoln University of Missouri for outstanding coverage of minority issues.

  • The New Jersey Press Association’s Innovation Award and the Lloyd P. Burns Memorial Award for responsible journalism, public service. “This remarkable project resulted from combining smart, tough investigative reporting with some of the better aspects of public journalism. The Press broke a story about a major real estate fraud and kept hammering away at it… Having scored on a major story, The Press addressed the question of what’s wrong with its community and to help find out, held public forums to hear from citizens. Armed with an agenda, The Press then took on the various issues with in-depth reporting and used the Internet to publish additional information… in the best tradition of public service.

“We hope that this combines all the aspects of good journalism within the realm of civic journalism,” said Jody Calendar, Deputy Editor of The Press, who spearheaded the project.
