Spring 1995
Congratulations…
To the Charlotte Observer, whose series “Taking Back our Neighborhoods,” examining problems and solutions in some of the city’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods, won a first-place public service award from the North Carolina Press Association. The articles have led more than 500 individuals and groups to offer help and triggered efforts to close down crack houses, demolish a neighborhood eyesore and build a recreation center.
Said the judges: “The Observer’s series… is the very definition of public service. The paper is showing the commitment, courage and enterprise needed to make a difference on the monumental social problems of crime and poverty. The Observer isn’t simply handing down a list of solutions for political leaders to implement. The paper is giving voice to the people of the neighborhoods and their ideas for change.”
